[This Friendship Bell was a gift from the San Diego Sister City of Yokohama, Japan, presented in May 1958 as part of the Centennial Celebration of formal relations between Yokohama and the U.S., the first such affiliation on the West Coast. The Japanese Friendship Bell and Pagoda structure was dedicated on December 10, 1960. In 2009 the Japanese gift of the sculpture "The Girl in the Red Shoes" was installed nearby as a companion piece.]
