Drive-By Art (1992)

Lars Hawkes

DESCRIPTION:  three 12-foot high painted steel sculptures in various shapes

Hawkes' three-piece ensemble, dedicated on May 13, 1992, attracts much roadside attention on California Highway 170 in the Valley Glen district.   The fading and partially damaged 1992 sculptures were removed in 2019 and restored by artist Scott Froschauer and given a fresh paint scheme (with assistance from AT&T Pioneers and CalTrans), and the ensemble was re-installed February 5, 2021.  Sometime in September/October 2023 the sculptures were again damaged by a roadside accident (see below), and the AT&T Pioneers volunteer group will again endeavor to have the damage repaired (Los Angeles Daily News, Oct. 31, 2023).
