Urban Arena

DESCRIPTION:   solstice viewing installation consisting of 
  • three 70-inch high by 19-inch by 12-inch black-colored concrete columns with vertical apertures, placed to focus solstice and equinox sun on a center obelisk
  • 95-inch high by 28-inch diameter black obelisk
  • 31-foot diameter glass mosaic pavement medallion depicting a portion of the solar system


This multiple-component installation by the Urban Arena design firm was dedicated on September 22, 2001, the autumnal equinox, in tribute to Suncatcher's sculptural design of focusing the equinox sunlight through column apertures to focus on and illuminate the 9-foot high obelisk.
The installation coincided with the dedication of Sunset View Park on September 22, 2001.  Adjacent to the Suncatcher installation is Cindy Jackson's Tribute to the Roughnecks bronze and iron sculpture realistically portraying two oilfiled workers at an oil well.
