De Portolá's full name was Jose Gaspar de Portolá y Rovira (1716 – 1786).  He was the Spanish military officer who lead the 1768 expedition into California during California's era of colonization by the Spanish Empire, with Junipero Serra leading the Franciscan missionaries.  In addition to leading the Portolá expedition, he served as the first Governor of the Californias.
