Library Wall (1967

Sergio O'Cadiz Moctezuma

DESCRIPTION:  sculptural poured-in-place concrete bas relief sculpture with patination, on multiple angled and curved walls that range from 11 feet to 26 feet in height and span approximately 240 linear feet

This early O'Cadiz Moctezuma sculptural installation represents his ambitious and high-profile artistic approach to the entrance of Cypress College's Library in 1967.  O'Cadiz Moctezuma's bas relief reflects the Brutalist style in both its massive and angular form, as well as its surface:  his tinted aggregate-heavy concrete material resembles a rough bark or clay-like appearance (see the 'signature' image below).  The piece reportedly drew criticism from the College's then-President Daniel Walker, but has since been lauded as an important public artwork by the Cypress College Art Department.
Clock chimes have been installed behind the upper curved wall portion of the sculpture.
