USS San Diego Memorial (2005)

DESCRIPTION:  Memorial public art installation honoring the highly decorated service of the World War II Navy cruiser USS San Diego and its crew, consisting of
  • 7-foot high by 10-foot wide bas relief sculpture of the USS San Diego, on a free-standing 28-foot high composite terra cotta wall (by Luis Thiele Quaintance)
  • life-size cast bronze sculpture of a sailor holding his helmet and gazing across the Pacific ocean (by Eugene Daub)
  • tinted and etched terrazzo hardscape depicting the Pacific theater of operations and the ship’s missions and activity
  • free-standing 28-foot high polished carnelian granite and composite terra cotta walls etched with battle records, campaign details, and words of tribute
