DESCRIPTION: 120-inch high by 40-inch wide petrachrome cast concrete tile mosaic mural
Grace Clements, a modernist painter and proponent of "post-surrealism" or "new classicism," created her mosaic using the petrachrome technique, a combination of colored concrete with crushed rock or tile, developed by Stanton Macdonald-Wright. Clements' mural was installed on the north façade and entrance to what had been the Music Department building of Bonita High School (later sold to the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles for a private Catholic school, renamed Damien High School). The mosaic was sponsored by the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration and restored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles when, having been covered with stucco, was rediscovered during building repairs in the 1990s. See Living New Deal for additional detail.
