Urban Light (2008)

by Chris Burden

DESCRIPTION:  Urban Light is an assemblage sculpture of 202 vintage street light lampposts from the 1920s and 1930s in a rectilinear array. The restored cast iron lampposts range from 20 to 30 feet in height and were salvaged from Los Angeles neighborhoods.  The installation is adjacent to the Wilshire Boulevard sidewalk and includes solar-powered lighting until 10 p.m.

This famous sculpture is the most popular public artwork in Southern California.  It is open and accessible to the general public 24/7.  Due to its daytime, evening and late night popularity, it is staffed by on-site security.
As part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Collection, occasional special events are scheduled by LACMA which may at times limit general public access.
