Hollywood Jazz 1945-1972 (1991, 2012)

Richard Wyatt, Jr.

DESCRIPTION:   26-foot high by 88-foot long bas relief ceramic tile portrait mural (replacing the artist's 1991 acrylic paint mural of the same image at the same site)

Richard Wyatt, Jr.'s original 19911 acrylic paint mural suffered decades of damage from direct southern exposure.  In 2012 Wyatt restored the mural by creating an accurate ceramic tile replica by transferring photographic images to an array of 2,288 12-inch ceramic tiles.2   The ceramic tiles were crafted with three-dimensional bas relief detail.
The mural depicts eleven 20th century jazz musicians: Nat King Cole (wearing his favorite tie2 ), Duke Ellington, Billie Holliday, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, and drummer Shelly Manne.  In between the portraits are names of more than four dozen notable jazz musicians.
