George Chaffey, Jr. (1848-1932) was a Canadian-born engineer, inventor, and community builder who founded the City of Ontario, Chaffey College and Chaffey High School.  After arriving in California in 1881, he and his brother William Chaffey purchased extensive land and water rights in 1882 in the Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, and Ontario areas and established the Etiwanda Water Company and then the larger San Antonio Water Company.  
At the invitation of the Victorian and South Australian colonial governments, George Chaffey, Jr.  and William Chaffey moved to Australia in 1886 to manage a large land development project, while their brother Charles Chaffey remained in Ontario to manage the brothers' interests.
