Library Steps / Bunker Hill Steps (1989)

Lawrence Halprin

DESCRIPTION:   60-foot wide architectural double stairway, flanking a cascading river rock and concrete "stream" flowing into a fountain with concrete seating

Halprin designed his Library Steps to be more than a passageway: he strove to create an "urban experience, not unlike that of a city street."1
Halprin incorporated Robert Graham's Source Figure sculpture and pool at the top of the steps (at Hope Place) as the symbolic water source of his cascading river rock stream, terminating in a fountain across from the Los Angeles Public Library entrance on Fifth Street.
