Diving Porpoise (1962)

John Edward Svenson

DESCRIPTION:  5-foot cast bronze sculpture of a diving dolphin, mounted within a fountain and pool

Svenson's bronze sculpture is the center feature of this two-jet fountain and pool, one of several pools in the Pomona Mall designed by Millard Sheets.
Porpoise or Dolphin:   Although archival data from the Pomona Public Library list the Svenson sculpture's title as "Diving Porpoise," this is likely an error.   The sculpture clearly depicts a dolphin - specifically, the elongated nose and curved dorsal fin are not features of a porpoise and are instead unique to those of a dolphin.
