Girl with Dog (1933)

Ruth Peabody

DESCRIPTION:  23-inch high by 18-inch wide by 16-inch deep cast bronze sculpture, mounted on a 43-inch high by 34-inch by 76-inch flagstone-faced concrete water fountain

This sculpture is Laguna Beach's first and oldest public artwork.  It was commissioned by Isadora Kerr and dedicated on November 19, 1933.   According to the city plaque, Kerr was a social worker with the Settlement Movement, who commissioned Peabody's sculpture as a public art memorial to her sister Helen.  The plaque states the sculpture was "funded in memory of Helen Weiser, who loved dogs."
Joe Jahraus (namesake of Jahraus Park) and others built the fountain structure and bench, with the fountain component originally designed with cascading water flowing into the small basin or animal trough at its base. The entire installation was sponsored by the Laguna Beach Garden Club.
LOCATION:   Jahraus Park, between Cliff Drive and N. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, California, USA
