DESCRIPTION: painted steel sculpture mounted within a circular fountain; dozens of murals on freeway support pillars, performance stage, and facilities building exterior
San Diego's 7.9-acre Chicano Park is a National Historic Landmark and contains historic and contemporary murals produced from 1973 to the present, covering more than a dozen freeway support pillars under the intersection of Interstate 5 and Highway 75 across an almost eight-acre park area.
A cast bronze statue of General Emiliano Zapata by Arturo Ruano Singh was installed at the northern end of Chicano Park circa 2013. In 2019, the following artistic and cultural amenities were added to the site, each embellished with mural work: sculptural fountain, performance stage, and facility building. In collaboration with the original artists, the 2023 Chicano Park Mural Restoration Project will restore more than fifteen specific murals.
