Harmony (2012)

(Idyllwild Town Monument)

David Roy

DESCRIPTION:  5 ton, 25-foot high by 15-foot diameter carved wood and cedar tree sculptural assemblage

This massive carved wood assemblage, completed in July 2012, is the artistic component of the Idyllwild Town Monument, maintained by the Art Alliance of Idyllwild and the local Rotary Club.  It was constructed on a base of four large cedar tree trunks combined together to make a raw block onto which the life-size native animals - California condor, grizzly bear, mountain lion and cubs - were mounted.  Roy's method of using the Gorilla Glue product for attaching the large carved wood components was novel and received popular attention.  Accompanying this assemblage are three separate carved wood sculptures:  coyote  on a tree stump, 64-inch high standing bear, and the artist's pet dog.   A small set of steps in the front lead to a landing for visitors to pose for pictures.
