Early Pomona Family (1962)

Millard Sheets, Sheets Studio artists

DESCRIPTION:  12-foot high by 22-foot wide building-mounted ceramic and glass mosaic

This mosaic depicts a young family surrounded by a horseback rider and dogs.  It was produced in 1962 by the Sheets Studio, notably including artist Denis O'Connor, and was considered the Studio's greatest accomplishment to date.1
Title unknown:  This mosaic work was part of Millard Sheets' long series of commissioned mosaics for Home Savings building façades in Southern California, and there appears to be no data on its intended title.  Although many Sheets bank building mosaics were given names/titles that may have been known when they were unveiled, the titles were not always recorded.  A smaller 1962 mosaic by Sheets, also originally untitled and labeled "Horse and Tree", exists nearby in the Pomona Mall at 200 East Second Street.
