Civility (2024)

Kate Jessup and Celeste Cooning

DESCRIPTION:  10-foot high by 4-foot wide by 4-foot deep painted (white) stencil-cut steel sculpture, mounted on two 24-inch high by 53-inch wide by 10-inch deep concrete plinths, representing the theme of 'civility'

Jessup and Cooning's stencil-cut sculpture is designed with a 360-degree perspetive - its leaf design and 'CIVILITY' letters seemingly in movement from the view of passing traffic and pedestrians.  According to their artists' statement, they were inspired by "the iconic architecture of Palm Springs and the importance of celebrating courtesy and respect as public practice" (City of Palm Springs).  Sketches and images informing Kate Jessup's design can be seen at Kate Jessup.
The Pillars of Palm Springs installation follows a 3/4-mile stretch of Tahquitz Canyon Way from Palm Springs City Hall to Sunrise Way, and is the largest and most comprehensive public art project initiated by the Palm Springs Public Art Commission.  It was dedicated on World Art Day, April 15, 2024.   For information on the entire installation of six sculptures, see  Pillars of Palm Springs.
LOCATION:  center median of E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, approx. 150 feet west of Farrell Drive, Palm Springs, California, USA
