The Hats (2018)

DESCRIPTION:   three-piece installation of oxidized steel, bronze, and fiberglass sculptures (by Michael Davis and Eugene Daub), with ceramic tiles (by Elyse Pignolet and Sandow Birk)
  • Lincoln's Hat:  6.5-foot by 7-foot diameter oxidized steel sculpture of Abraham Lincoln's top hat, with a vertical facsimile of Lincoln's signature and the opening sentence of the Gettysburg Address etched into the brim,  which also serves as bench seating
  • Amelia's Helmet:  6.5-foot by 4.5-foot diameter bronze sculpture of Amelia Earhart's aviator cap, with cut-outs of her Electra 10E airplane and aviation symbols
  • Worker's Straw Hat:  46-inch by 9-foot diameter reinforced fiberglass sculpture of a broad-brimmed straw hat, covered with ceramic tiles and encircled with a 12-inch wide hand-painted ceramic tile mural by Elyse Pignolet and Sandow Birk depicting scenes of Burbank's agricultural past, including melon crops; the sculpture's brim also serves as bench seating
