Romero at the Alvarado Street side of MacArthur Park. According to the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Mejia's dove sculpture and Joaquin Antonio Serrano Lopez' memorial statue of Msgr. Oscar Arnulfo Romero were facilitated and funded by the Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund (SALEF), with assistance from the El Salvador Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Los Angeles City Redevelopment Agency. The El Salvador Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended invitations for artworks to both artists based on their artistic expertise and cultural sensitivity to the project. Mejia's doves "are representative of people who died during the ten year civil war in El Salvador, significant historical events, and are symbolic of the aspirations for peace and justice advocated by Monsignor Oscar A. Romero. The top dove represents the migration of thousands of Salvadoran immigrants into the U.S., who are seeking a better life and brighter future." - Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs
