"Three Scenes from Shakespeare" (1963) by Millard Sheets, Denis O'Connor, and Sheets Studio artists

(originally untitled)

DESCRIPTION: 30-foot high by 58-foot wide building-mounted ceramic, stone and glass mosaic of three vignettes depicting scenes from Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra," "Romeo and Juliet," and "King Lear"

Millard Sheets referred to this mosaic of three scenes as "vignettes" rather than a triptych.1 It was unveiled and dedicated at a large community event on December 9, 1966. Title unknown: There appears to be no specific data on this mosaic's intended title. Although many Sheets mosaics were given names/titles that may have been known when they were unveiled, the titles were not always recorded.
Adjacent to this mosaic on the building's east wing is a separate 5-panel ceramic tile mosaic that was a private commission by the Sheets Studio in 1976. It memorializes Elizabeth Monroe Wood, art collector and patron of Scripps College and The Claremont Colleges. Titled "A Celebration of Joy in Memory of Elizabeth Monroe Wood," it depicts African, Indonesian, Mexican, Hopi, and Japanese dancers.
