DESCRIPTION: life-size cast bronze statue of artist and surfer John Severson standing at an easel holding an artist's palette, mounted on a tapered 4-foot high concrete plinth John Severson (1933-2017) was an artist, photographer, editor, author and filmmaker focused on surfing culture, surf media and art. He was also a talented surfer, winning the 1961 Peru International Surf Contest. The statue depicts Severson standing in front of his easel with palette in hand, evoking his extensive contribution to surfing art and media. Limebrook's statue of John Severson represents Dana Point's historic surfing and sailing culture, in company with six other statues of famous Dana Point watersport athletes, filmmakers, artists, and entrepreneurs. Artist Mia Tavonatti's "The Endless Summer" mosaic provides the iconic surfing culture film image to Watermen's Plaza.
