"The Museum of Space Information" (1995) by Carl Cheng

DESCRIPTION: Station art consisting of:

  • tower-mounted "satellite" sculptures with video monitors (showing continuous NASA space flight data)

  • kaleidoscope viewing lens (directed at lower level street traffic)

  • windscreens with miniature images of geologic cross-sections

  • translucent blue glass station canopy

  • pavement with etched granite and embedded metal

Carl Cheng intended this multi-component project to merge themes from the area's coastal environment and aerospace industry. Building from an imaginary sea bottom on the station's lower-level, the coastal theme continues up to the platform level of the "cool blue wave" (MTA) of blue station canopy. Themes of space and the cosmos are reflected in the platform paving, with embedded galaxy designs, metal instruments, and moon footprints.
