Divine Order:  The Manifestation of the Soaring Spirit (1995)

Charles Dickson

 DESCRIPTION:   station art consisting of:
  • etched windscreen glass
  • sculptural seating
  • wall-mounted relief sculptures
  • terrazzo and etched granite pavement
  • ceramic tiled columns

Dickson's concept for the collection of features was to reflect the community's contribution to preserving the El Segundo Blue Butterfly, and to call attention to the parallels between nature in flight and the development of El Segundo's aerospace technology.
Artists' Statement:  “We are consumed by the desire to develop new technologies and to improve and replace old methods, only to discover that ultimately all we are doing is mimicking nature and its complex systems. The station elements, reflecting the universal human desire to fly and to reach higher goals, are designed to provoke conversations and to provide the opportunity to share common experiences among strangers."  -- Charles Dickson
LOCATION:  station platform and street-level station entrance, Metro C Line (Green), Mariposa Station, 555 N. Nash Street, El Segundo, California, USA
