Embracing Peace (2007)

John Seward Johnson II

DESCRIPTION:  26-foot high foam-core sculpture with urethane outer layer

This sculpture is referred to as a "computer-generated copy" of earlier and similar works by John Seward Johnson II (aka Seward Johnson).  Although confusion exists regarding the difference between his earlier work (some titled as Unconditional Surrender) and his later work, this later sculpture, however similar to his earlier works, is officially titled Embracing Peace (see plaque below).
Johnson claimed his original monumental sculpture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945 when Japan surrendered, was not based on the Eisenstaedt photograph made famous in 1945 on the cover of LIFE Magazine (with copyright protections).  Johnson claimed his work was instead based on another similar Victor Jorgenson photograph (in the public domain) of the same Times Square scene.
