Phil Edwards is credited with being the first professional American surfer. He is know for his smooth "walking the board" signature style. He created the first signature surfboard, and was prominently featured in the Bruce Brown films "Surfing Hollow Days" and "The Endless Summer" (Wikipedia) The statue was dedicated June 7, 2019.
