Indians and Yuccas (1968, 1982)

by Millard Sheets,  Denis O'Connor, and Sheets Studio artists

DESCRIPTION:  two-piece mosaic work consisting of:
  • 10-foot by 16-foot building-mounted ceramic and glass mosaic (by Millard Sheets, 1968)
  • 5-foot by 6-foot wall-mounted ceramic and glass mosaic (by Denis O'Connor, 1982)

The first of these two mosaics depicts Native Americans on horseback surrounded by blooming yuccas, and was produced by the Sheets Studio for the new Pomona First Federal bank building in 1968.
After Sheets' death, the bank added a drive-up teller component and commissioned Sheets studio artist Denis O'Connor in 1982 to produce a companion piece.  It is one of the few mosaic works containing O'Connor's initials/signature.  The Sheets Studio also produced Pomona First Federal Bank signage in two extant mosaic panels on the east and west façades of the building.
Original title unknown:  This mosaic work was part of Millard Sheets' long series of commissioned mosaics for Home Savings building façades in Southern California, and there appears to be no data on its intended titleAlthough many of Sheets' bank building mosaics were given names/titles that may have been known when they were unveiled, the titles were not always recorded.
