DESCRIPTION: 30-inch high by 18-inch wide by 46-inch long verdigris patinated bronze sculpture, mounted horizontally to a 62-inch high by 25-inch wide by 8-inch deep polished black granite free-standing wall/base
This sculpture was inspired by Richard Henry Dana's memoir Two Years Before the Mast in recognition of the "hardy breed of sailor who worked aloft in fair or foul weather in the 1800's" (City of Dana Point). The sculpture includes a 1986 commemoration plaque for the 150th anniversary of Dana's visit, and a Swenson Family Foundation plaque quoting from Dana's description of when he was "ordered aloft for the first time, to reef topsails" (see below).

Anchored next to Pecharka's scupture is the Spirit of Dana Point (formerly named the Pilgrim of Newport) a contemporary 118-foot traditionally rigged schooner that serves as a floating living-history classroom. It replaced a replica of the two-masted cargo brig Pilgrim from Richard Henry Dana's seamanship accounts in Two Years Before the Mast. The replica sank at the spot in 2020.
