Hollywood and La Brea Gateway (1993)

Alternate title: The Four Ladies of Hollywood

Catherine Hardwicke, Harl West and others

DESCRIPTION:   stainless steel gazebo gateway sculpture, supported by four 7-foot high stainless steel statues (Mae West, Anna May Wong, Dolores Del Rio, Dorothy Dandridge) by sculptor Harl West, topped by a gilded weather vane statuette of Marilyn Monroe in a famous pose from her film The Seven Year Itch; the gazebo is surrounded by granite tile mosaic paving

This gazebo and statue installation at one end of the Hollywood Walk of Fame includes several components by different artists, and it has the alternate title 'The Four Ladies of Hollywood.'  The Smithsonian American Art Museum's online catalog describes West's four statues of Mae West, Anna May Wong, Dolores Del Rio, and Dorothy Dandridge as wearing "glamorous long gowns."  Harl West's "gowns", however, are sculpted so minimally as to be barely distinguishable on each of the female forms, with the result that the statues appear essentially as nudes.
In June of 2019 the Marilyn Monroe statuette on the spire was stolen (Los Angeles Times, June 19, 2019) and not recovered (as of 2022).
