DESCRIPTION: 12-foot high cast bronze and rock sculpture of a nude male surfer riding a wave The "ultimate challenge" refers to "the crucial moment when they [the surfer] become one/united mass of controlled energy" (Smithsonian). The City of Huntington Beach's public art program was established with the commission and acquisition of this 1972 sculpture that Shumpert sculpted in Pietrasanta, Italy. It was initially placed at a City Hall location before its present high-profile location at the intersection of beach access and the City's downtown.
