Vermonica (1993, 2020)

Sheila Klein

DESCRIPTION:   30-foot high by 120-foot long assemblage sculpture of 25 vintage street light standards of various heights in linear formation, with "Vermonica" identification banners hung from two of the light standards
An earlier 1993 version of this assemblage sculpture, differently configured, was installed in the parking lot of a shopping mall a short distance from the present location.  The title "Vermonica" reflects the earlier location at Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.
The original installation was funded in part by a small grant from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, despite its installation on private property and not  being officially adopted by the City.  The installation was later removed in 2017 by the Bureau of Street Lighting to a temporary location to accommodate parking lot improvements.  The City of Los Angeles then formally acquired the piece as a public artwork, and reassembled and installed the present work on October 22, 2020.Read more from artist Sheila Klein.
