Lewis MacAdams Monument (2017)

DESCRIPTION:   80-inch high by 40-inch by 27-inch 4-sided tinted concrete memorial to poet and Los Angeles River conservationist Lewis MacAdams, including the following components:
  • bas relief portrait of MacAdams with his notable quotation 
  • bas relief sculpture of a great egret, with MacAdams' poem "Solitude Conundrum" 
  • bas relief sculpture of frog and fish, with MacAdams' poem "Look,"
  • MacAdams' poem "To Artesia"
  • monument history panel (in English and Spanish)


Eugene Daub's Lewis MacAdams Monument pays tribute to the poet and Los Angeles River conservationist with a bas relief portrait and river images with Adams' quotations and poetry.  The monument has also attracted the informal title "Politics and Poetry" and was dedicated October 7, 2017.  It is situated at the northeast corner of the renamed Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park (formerly Marsh Park), and is at the entrance to Michael Amescua's River Gate (2017) sculptural steel gates and the Los Angeles River Greenway Trail. 
Artist's statement:  "Almost everything I do is in bronze. ... But in this case, concrete seemed appropriate since Lewis has campaigned so hard for its removal from the L.A. River channel."     - Eugene Daub
