"The Literate Fence" (1992-93) by Ries Niemi

DESCRIPTION: 9-foot high by 100-foot long steel sculptural fence and five pairs of steel gates, containing design motifs and stencil-cut quotations in different languages
In consultation with the library's foreign language librarians, Ries Niemi designed quotations about books, knowledge and reading into this sculptural fencing and gates. The quotations are in the different languages historically spoken throughout the Los Angeles area. The fence also contains design motifs from earlier library architecture.
