Crenshaw Stories (1995)

Buzz Spector

 DESCRIPTION:   station art consisting of
  • hand-painted ceramic tile murals containing hand-written  stories from the Crenshaw community [street level]
  • sculptural  "open book" concrete benches [station platform level]
  • hardscape/pavement design

Spector's station art theme is that of an "open book" of multi-ethnic and multi-lingual stories from the diverse Crenshaw area.  His platform seating and pavement patterns reflect the open book designs that the first-hand stories written on his tile murals symbolically fill.
Artist's Statement:  “Transportation systems are not just means of moving people—they are metaphors of the cultural and spiritual links between peoples. Crenshaw Stories has been designed to stress the connections between us that may be found in the stories we tell about our lives. If we can better understand each other’s stories, we’ll be better able to appreciate the connections between us all.”  - Buzz Spector|MetroArt
