Navis (1990)

Michael Davis

DESCRIPTION:   9-foot by 17-foot installation of a 3-piece sculpture ensemble, backed by a 2-sided 13-foot high by 21.7-foot wide slate tile wall and mounted within an octagonal pool/fountain
  • 192-inch high by 18-inch deep conical stainless steel sculpture
  • 60-inch diameter iron spherical (bouy) sculpture
  • 58-inch high by 206-inch long by 17.5-inch deep gold-patinated bronze wedge-shaped sculpture

Davis' ensemble reflects the nautical themes [navis: ship, vessel] of radar images at sea and the navigation of the globe with the repurposing of a salvaged 5-foot diameter iron bouy.
Artist's statement:  "The sculpture takes into consideration the ship vessel itself, courageously circumnavigating the globe as it depends on systems including astronomy, radio waves and radar returns.  The tall tower mimics the actual shape of a radar return on a cathode screen."  - Michael Davis
