A Tribute to Industry (1994) 

Horace Washington

DESCRIPTION:  station art consisting of:
  • sculptural seating
  • embossed paving tiles
  • pole-mounted painted metal shapes

In tribute to the industrial history of the Vernon Avenue and Central Alameda area, Horace Washington's station art provides sculptural platform seating in the guise of giant spools of thread and a sewing machine bobbin (reflecting the garment industry), as well as giant wrenches.  His paving tile designs also reflect buttons tools,  nuts and washers.
Artist's Statement:   “The use of these art objects as benches, enhanced by the richness of the colors and the variety of materials, will add a noble aesthetic to the environment.”
