Cadillactus (2024)

Roger Reutimann

DESCRIPTION:   approx. 12-foot high by 8-foot diameter painted steel and stainless steel sculpture with vintage Cadillac taillights

Reutimann's whimsical sculpture represents the theme of creativity and marks the western end of the Pillars of Palm Springs installation.   Reutimann incorporates tail sections of a 1959 Cadillac for his cactus design, with "creativity" in cursive script and illuminated red Cadillac taillights as the cactus fruit.
Artist's statement:  The sculpture merges the city’s appreciation for mid-century modern aesthetics with its natural desert setting. The sculpture is a fusion of industrial car design with the organic unpredictability of nature.  The taillights serve as symbolic representations of cactus flowers or fruits, which will light up at night.  - Roger Reutimann
The Pillars of Palm Springs installation follows a 3/4-mile stretch of Tahquitz Canyon Way from Palm Springs City Hall to Sunrise Way, and is the largest and most comprehensive public art project initiated by the Palm Springs Public Art Commission.  It was dedicated on World Art Day, April 15, 2024.   For information on the entire installation of six sculptures, see  Pillars of Palm Springs.
LOCATION:   center median of E. Tahquitz Canyon Way at N. Luring Drive, Palm Springs, California, USA
