Pleasures Along the Beach (1969, 2024)

Millard Sheets

DESCRIPTION:  20-ton, 16-foot high by 40-foot wide wall-mounted ceramic and glass mosaic mural

This mosaic is notable for its size, its popular subject, and the full Millard Sheets signature.   It was one of the largest Home Savings and Loan branch mosaics still existing at the time of its removal to the Hilbert Museum, and the mosaic's beach theme with tanned sunbathers and a bikini-clad girls made it a popular Santa Monica landmark for more than 50 years.  The full Millard Sheets signature is also unusual, but the mosaic nevertheless had significant contributions from Nancy Colbath at the Sheets Studio.
In 2019 the mosaic was purchased by Mark Hilbert for the Hilbert Museum of California Art, was dismantled on June 19, 2019, and remained in storage during the Hilbert Museum's renovation.   Artist Brian Worley, who formerly worked with Sheets, oversaw the mosaic's 2024 restoration and re-installation.
