Blue Line Totems in Red (1994)

Roberto Salas

DESCRIPTIONstation art consisting of:
  • column-mounted painted steel totem sculptures
  • tile mosaic pavement containing proverbs or "dichos"

Roberto Salas' "totems" reflect images from the earlier historic Red Car trolley system throughout Los Angeles and Southern California.  Salas' stencil images are taken from 1,100 unique shapes that Red Car conductors used to passenger punch tickets.
The tile pavement mosaics are sayings, proverbs or "dichos" on the theme of passing time.
