"Indians and Yuccas" (1968, 1982) by Millard Sheets and Denis O'Connor

(originally untitled)

DESCRIPTION:  two-piece mosaic work consisting of a 10-foot by 16-foot building-mounted ceramic and glass mosaic (Millard Sheets, 1968) and a 5-foot by 6-foot wall-mounted ceramic and glass mosaic (Denis O'Connor, 1982)

COMMENT:  The first of the two mosaics, produced by Sheets in tandem with the building of the Pomona First Federal bank branch, was completed in 1968.  Years later after Sheets' death, the bank added a drive-up teller component and commissioned O'Connor to produce a companion piece of the same theme.  Both mosaics are signed. Sheets also produced Pomona First Federal signage in two
mosaic panels on the east and west
façades which still remain, in an agreement between Chase Bank and the City of Claremont.
Sheets rarely titled his public mosaics, which is the case here.  They are therefore commonly labeled by their images or theme.
