"Poderosas" (2020) by Alicia Rojas and Camilo Romero

DESCRIPTION: 6-foot high by 70-foot long acrylic paint portrait mural honoring eleven prominent "poderosas" (strong Latina women), with eight 4-foot by 4-foot portrait panels


Alicia Rojas was assisted by Camilo Romero who developed and managed the tribute mural project. The mural includes portraits of the following:
  • activist Dolores Huerta; California's first Latina judge Frances Muñoz;
  • schoolgirl Sylvia Mendez who at 8 years old represented the successful landmark legal case of Hispanic childrens' rights to public school;
  • Modesta Avila who suffered a felony conviction in 1889 for protesting eminent domain use of her San Juan Capistrano property by the Santa Fe Railroad;
  • Camilo Romero's family members.
